I am sure by now that every angler has made his or her “New Year’s resolution” to fish more than last year and go on at least one big fishing trip. Maybe I am speaking for everyone, but I know that’s my goal. After reading Hawgdaddy’s “Top Ten Fishing Destinations”, I have to admit that I was pretty fired up. I do plan to fish quite a few of those places in the upcoming year. You know, I just don’t buy into this whole thing of having to pay a lot of money (possibly a leg, arm, or kidney on the black market), travel halfway across the world, and get a fishing guide who doesn’t speak English in order to catch some really nice fish. Maybe it’s just that there are many people who have more money than me, which is a pretty likely scenario given my current status. While Hawgdaddy’s top ten fishing destinations are far more feasible for most anglers, I began compiling a list of exotic locations that the average fisherman will never visit. Many workless days as well as early morning fishing show addictions can be very inspirational and influential. At some point in my life, if God allows, I plan to visit a handful of these places. There isn’t a particular order to this list. Most likely my choice(s) will depend on finances, my schedule, and unanimous votes from those who will go with me. With that said, here are my “Top Ten Most Unlikely Fishing Destinations of 2007″.
1. Alagnak River (Katmai National Park), Alaska – For as long as I can remember, I have had a desire to fish in Alaska. Now that I have become an avid fly fisherman, the fire burns even hotter. Located in the Katmai National Park, The Alagnak River has over 1000 miles of stream to fish with the depth ranging from 3 to 8 ft. This makes wading possible as well as the ease of making a good fly presentation. The spring and summer months are best for catching a variety salmon as well as rainbows the size of your leg. One word of advice, don’t pet the brown furry creatures.
2. Ram River, Canada – After a recent Yellowstone trip, I have become obsessed with catching cutthroat trout. For those who like facts (not to mention names…Hawgdaddy) the Ram River is home to the purest cutthroat trout population in Alberta. Divided into two sections, the South Ram River has limited access and is encompasses by an extremely beautiful untouched landscape. With hardly any fishing pressure, this can be a great place for some great cutthroat action. I think the Tvangler staff must try this seeing that the only way into this place is a extremely difficult hike or by helicopter. Remember Deep Creek Hawgdaddy???
