New Tying Desk and New Classifieds Item

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

I promised a photo of my new tying desk, and here it is. Getting the desk has prompted me to reorganize my tying materials. It’s going to be a big job. The desk was a gift from Jacqulyn.

New TVangler Classifieds Item!

Posting Date: July 18, 2009

Item: Bill Ballan Heirloom Trout Fly Reel

Status: Available Pending Sold!

Price: $100 + $5 Shipping

Description: This is a classically-styled fly reel by Bill Ballan. I’ve used the reel for two years now, and I really like it. It doesn’t have an adjustable drag, and it works equally well in either right or left-hand retrieve. It screams delightfully when a trout takes drag. I would put Bill Ballan’s reels somewhat below the upper end classic reels, but they’re great for someone who likes the classic look and still wants good performance. It looks great on a bamboo rod. The only thing wrong with this one is a scratch in the finish near one of the screws on the side plate. Looks like someone let a screwdriver slip when trying to remove the cover. The reel comes spooled with a good Cortland Peach DT5 line. This reel is being sold new for $225. The first person to email me can have this one for $100 plus $5 shipping. After two weeks, the price goes down to $75. Check out the TVangler Classifieds page for all the details.

A New Sweet Deal from TVangler (No Foolin’!)

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

I thought I’d kick off April Fool’s Day with another special deal on some fishing equipment. No trickeration involved. I promise.

For this second item, I had planned to offer an 8wt Cabela’s Stowaway fly rod with a decent reel and a fly line all for $50, but I ended up selling it to a close friend. So, to make it up to you, I’m offering the sweetest deal of the whole lot (at least I think it is). But it comes with a slight breakage of my own rules. I’m starting it off at a bit more than half price. Not much, but just a little because of the item’s value. Then after two days, if no one has picked it up, I’m taking off 25%, which will place it lower than half what you’d probably be able to find this item for any where else. There might be some going on ebay for as cheap as I’m offering this one, but if so I haven’t seen it.

Additionally, since I feel bad about that bass rod, I plan to build one in the future and offer it as one of our deals at 1/4 what I’d sell it for otherwise.

So, without further ado… (more…)

Special Deals from TVangler

St. Croix Legend Ultra 8ft 4wt fly rod.

St. Croix Legend Ultra 8ft 4wt fly rod.

Status: Sold!

Here at the TVangler, we buy lots of gear. Well, mostly we salivate over gear we can’t afford, but we do buy a good bit more than normal sane people can understand. We don’t need it all, but we usually want it all. It’s a lifelong pursuit, and that’s why we’ll always be broke. During the course of buying all this gear, we occasionally and regretfully come face-to-face with the concrete reality that we simply don’t have the space to store it all, not without adding onto the house and that would cut into the fishing time. So, since we love our readers so much, we’re going to offer you special deals on this excess tackle. I typically offload my excess stuff on Craigslist, and I’ll continue to do so. But first, I’m going to offer it to TVangler readers at half the price I would ask for on Craigslist, plus $5 for shipping. After two weeks with no takers, I will take another 25% off the cost. After two more weeks, I’ll remove it from the site.

Now before you get too excited, we’re a small group of relatively blue-collar fishermen, so we don’t have just tons of stuff to get rid of. However, I think you’ll probably find some things to your liking. We’ll offer items from rods (some rather pricey ones and some bargain bin ones) to reels to fly boxes. Maybe even camping gear and other not necessarily fishing related items. I might even sell some of the rods I build this way. I’m not planning to run an auction site here or anything like that. Just a benefit to thank you for reading the site. I’ll try to post one item per month, but no guarantees. For any item over $100, you can have three days to inspect it, after which you can keep it, or you can return it for a refund. I don’t have a Paypal account or anything like that, so I’ll accept personal checks or money orders for now. I’ll maintain a Classifieds page accessible to the left under Pages with the current item(s) listed and a more orderly list of rules.

The first offering is a St. Croix Legend Ultra 8′ 4wt 4-piece fly rod. Until I got into bamboo rods and building my own graphite and fiberglass rods, this was my go-to stick, especially for mountain trout streams. If you buy one of these new, it’ll set you back roughly $320. As you can tell from the grip, the rod has seen a fair amount of use, but there’s nothing wrong with it. The only reason I’m getting rid of it is because I thought it’d make a good item to start this off with, and I hate to see it sitting in the corner not being used. The rod is made in the USA, has a fast, snappy action, and is deadly on mountain trout. It comes with the very nice rod tube lying beside it in the top shot. I believe it will still be covered by St. Croix’s lifetime warranty, but if you’re concerned about that, you’ll need to read up about it on St. Croix’s website. I had planned to ask $200 for it, but I’ll take $100 + $5 = $105 from the first to email me at tvanglerwebmaster[at]gmail[dot]com. I haven’t kept up with what these are going for in used condition, but that sounds like a good deal to me. Feel free to leave comments informing me otherwise, and I’ll consider adjusting the price, assuming someone doesn’t buy it first. Also, I can only ship to US addresses for now.

Take care,
Nathan
